Reliable help in our neighborhood? The residents of the West
Slope neighborhood encourage responsible youth to become responsible
entrepreneurs. For that reason, we are dedicating a page to young
persons who are willing to perform odd jobs. If you are looking for
someone to do general clean-up, lawn services, babysitting, or other
tasks that are better accomplished by a younger person, consider
helping out those who are willing to work right here near home.
Visit the Willing Workers page for more information.
Wow, what a question! Why doesn't traffic slow down? Join us at
any regular meeting to find out what we are doing about the
problem.
Why doesn't the neighborhood have a service day? What a great
idea! Let's start in 2008 and make this an annual event. There are a
number of neighbors who might benefit from having a WSNAC Working Party
visit them. From cleaning and pruning in the yard to painting and
hauling. Many hands make light work, Mother used to say! One example
of such a working party is held each Fall by members of the
Portland First Church of the Nazarene.
On a Saturday in August, workers descend on West and East Sylvan
Middle Schools and spruce them up for the school year. No better way
to meet your neighbors than to work side-by-side.
Why doesn't the neighborhood rent a dumpster or two for Spring or
Fall clean-up? Another great idea that has been discussed in the
past. Should we schedule some? When? What should we charge to dump
general junk or yard debris? Come to a meeting and let's
discuss or use the "contact us" form to provide your recommendations.
The Mayor? Who are your local representatives and city council
members? These folks are willing to join us at our regular meetings
so watch our calendar and the road signs for announcements.
Happening in your neighborhood? At each meeting our Police and
Fire Departments report to us about events that have happened in the
neighborhood. They also provide great information about safety and
security for our families - and hints about common sense things we
can do to protect and possibly save lives of family members,
friends, or neighbors.
Our NAC meeting held? We generally meet at 7 PM on the 3rd
Tuesday of each month in the Library at the West Sylvan Middle
School. Meetings are generally lively and our chairs keep us on task
and on agenda so we don't spend all night at the school. Our
meetings become very active during times when projects affect
our neighborhood. Highway widening is a good example. Without our NAC, there would likely be no sound walls along Highway 26 and fewer
trees replaced; there may have been a large cell tower in the
middle of our neighborhood or 11 houses shoehorned into a small
development. Never underestimate what we can do by working together.
